Origin
Lake Tarawera was
created by New
Zealand's last major volcanic eruption in 1866 of Mount Tarawera; and is
a large deep lake surrounded by volcanic vents formed after the eruption. The
Maori settlements of Te Ariki and Moura and the European settlement
of Te Wairoa were destroyed and over one hundred people died. In
this painting I have included the form of the Maori goddess
Hinemoa, to watch over Tarawera Lake and Tarawera Mountain,
shown top right. |
