Origin
The
main figure in this work was drawn from the model, at a time when I
studied the work of French artist Raoul Dufy. Both figures in the painting exemplify the title
of the work - the background figure in wistful mode, while the attitude
of the main figure is one of contemplation. This painting is
perhaps an early example of the tableau series, which is shown in
Gallery 3. Sometimes, as in this work, I enjoy colour for it's
own sake. My palette is bright, the work well delineated, and
the feeling is one of composure.
