Origin
This painting reflects my interest in the classical history of the Romans of antiquity. The design of the family group is based on the pyramid; to add a sense of time and place, I have enclosed the group of figures with a series of columns and architectural motifs; an idyllic atmosphere; and a sense of abundance and richness.

Essentially, the work is a pastoral bathing scene, using a stage presentation. I had no predetermined plan, and so enjoyed the progression from the central figures, or characters, to the surrounding architecture, landscape and the frieze of bird-life.
