Origin
This painting shows a bird's-eye view of the central business district in any city. All of these areas present a grid-like arrangement of high density office blocks, arcades, substations , warehouses and factories, forming an interlocking pattern. This includes the areas between and around each establishment.

"Main Street" illustrates the random and ad-hoc nature of urban planning, which nevertheless contains an interesting symmetry of squares and oblongs which define many business or industrial areas.
