Origin
Tongan decoration consists of geometricised plants, animals, fish, shells, coats-of-arms and regional motifs.

Natural vegetable dyes are used to colour the designs on tapa cloth. Brown comes from the bark and earth; red from clay; and black from the soot of burnt candles. Black, brown and red form the basis for tapa design throughout the Pacific region. I have added cream, pink and grey to complement these colours, in both Tapa canvases.
