Origin
The arts of the medieval and early renaissance periods are wonderfully rich and enlightening. These eras used ornamentation in the form of intricate lattice work and filigree design. The influence of the byzantine era was most likely the origin for this style; the expression of religious beliefs was often the purpose of each work.

The above painting is derived from the decorative, filigree designs seen in the making of jewellery and drinking vessels, using precious stones; these aspects have been woven into a cruciform. The discipline involved in painting Regina also gave an insight into the art of illuminated texts and tapestries of that period; many examples show the use of ornamentation as a great, decorative art form.
