Origin
The main motif in this painting are seashells found on the beaches of New Zealand. Of the variety of shells that I have adapted for this work are the Wentle Trap Shells found in the North Island; Moon Shells, with their distinctive patterns; The sculptured Australasian Trumpet, and also the frilled Venus Shell, found in both North and South Islands of New Zealand.

The predominant characteristic of the shells that were used, are the rhythmic whorls, spirals and ridges. Colours and design are random, floating and prolific. Each portion of the painting has been built up into a thick impasto, giving the finished work a sculptural dimension; all contributes to a feeling of the richness and variety of the ocean and seashore.
