Origin
My home town of Christchurch is surrounded by the Canterbury Plains. This surrounding land is divided into sections for growing various crops and the result, from the air, consists of a multiplicity of colours and shapes.
I did not have to simplify the design of this semi-abstract landscape very much. Roads became intersecting lines, and the actual colours of the Canterbury Plains were many and varied.
The presence of the Canterbury Plains are part of the heritage of those who live in and around Christchurch city in the South Island of New Zealand. The Plains form the largest area of flat land in the country, and are intersected by four braided rivers between the Southern Alps and the Pacific Ocean.
