Origin
Each bay on the Coromandel peninsula provides a variety of interesting focal points for the artist. At Flaxmill Bay, the limestone formations and volcanic rock interested me. In my painting I have shown one area, where I have developed and painted a piece of volcanic rock as a focal point, and have used the surrounding limestone formations as additional features. Once again the branches of a pohutakawa tree are never far away.

The bay was formerly known as Maramaratotara Bay, and once had a mill operating on the foreshore - it then became known simply as Flaxmill Bay.

Captain James Cook careened (caulking and cleaning) his ship Endeavour in the bay in 1769.
