Origin
The Richmond Ranges, southwest of Nelson in the Marlborough District, stretch south to Lake Rotoiti. The active Alpine Fault line in the South Island runs parallel to these ranges, producing tremors and earthquakes throughout the year.

Nelson has a diverse micro-climate; the sunlight in this area is unique and powerful, and this is what captured my attention at the out-set. The range glistens along the snow-line; the skies in this area are an intense blue; and the ruggedness and inaccessibility of this mountain range formed 280 million years ago, is not for the inexperienced tramper.
