Origin
The tree roots, branches and rocks above, form part of Cathedral Cove, a short walk away from Hahei Beach on the Coromandel Peninsula. The beach has pink and white sand and also contains several mineral pools. At the south end is an old Maori pa.

The cove, or cavern, has an ancient and mysterious quality. Shadows are created amongst a variety of oddly shaped rocks, some of which seem to glow, illuminating the entrance to the cavern. I have painted several glazes over each rock form, using a combination of opaque and transparent colours. In contrast, a protective canopy of old pohutakawa roots and branches hovers above, giving a unique linear rhythmn to the composition as a whole..
