Origin Living in Christchurch in my earlier years, meant having an intimate connection and knowledge of the rivers which course through the Canterbury Plains. One of these, the Waimakariri River ( meaning cold rushing water in Maori ),is one of three large rivers in Canterbury. This painting shows the peaceful aspect of the rolling countryside of the Waimakariri. I have used soft graduated colours in a loose impressionist style, to show tussock and a variety of different shrub and tree forms just below the foothills of the area. The terrain is rugged, but is typical of this natural, untamed river, which winds through Arthur's Pass National Park down to the sea.
