Origin
Augustus was the first Roman ruler to be worshipped as a God, and he ruled from 27BC – AD14. Emperor worship was a way of showing loyalty to the Roman State. This was the age of imperial portraiture, where the ruler was almost deified as an absolute master. The portraits of Augustus were many and showed a youthful and idealised Emperor mainly on coins, and in sculpture.

The location for this painting is in the town of Baalbek, famous for it’s temple dedicated to Mercury. The clay pots and the base of a large pillar form part of the courtyard. I have placed a Roman coin size portrait of the emperor Augustus against a stone wall, using the enclave as a setting.
