Origin
The code of law in ancient Rome began in 451 BC with the Law of the Twelve Tables. These laws included civil procedure, property, constitutional principles, marriage, crime, funeral regulations, inheritance, debt, and parents and children. An official legal code was published, so that all would abide by it’s precepts.
The provisions of Roman law, though altered slightly, still apply in the Western world today.

The attraction for me to paint this picture was the Latin language; it is both simple, yet complex and has much beauty visually, in the way it was inscribed on buildings. The back-drop I have used in this image is from the remains of the Arch of Caracalla in Volubilis, Morocco. In the niche at the left I have placed a statue; and on the right a Corinthian column. On a row of blocks across the lower middle section of the painting, is the Latin word for “justice”.
