Origin
The Arch of Antonius Pius, located in the town of Sufetula, in what is now Tunisia, is the setting for this painting. The Arch had three archways and was reached along a colonnaded avenue lined with shops.

Mars was the Roman God of War and of Agriculture, but he was mainly known as a God of War and Battle, favoured by all soldiers in the Roman army. Here, Mars is portrayed as a warrior, wearing a crested helmet, which bears the emblem of a crested wolf. I have placed this portrait of a bas relief of Mars in a niche on a section of the Arch of Antonius Pius.
